Leaders of the Future Impress at Young Professionals Conference

Delegates of the UK&I Young Managers Conference

Potential future leaders of accountancy firms across the UK and Ireland joined forces for the ninth annual DFK UK & Ireland Young Professionals / Managers’ Conference.

The three-day conference was hosted by Langdowns DFK in Southampton and attracted 21 delegates from DFK International member firms, including many first time attendees.

Peter O’Connell, Managing Director of new member firm Shaw Gibbs, was also among those who attended the welcome reception and meal – marking Shaw Gibbs’ first official DFK event.

Soft skills development and networking were among the major themes of the conference and gave delegates the opportunity to make connections with those in similar positions in their respective firms.

A Dragons’ Den-style pitch activity was among a number of sessions which enabledmembers to develop their presentation and communication techniques.

Working in groups, they put their skills into practice by pitching for a job in front of a panel of judges.

Caroline Cassidy, Executive Officer of DFK UK & Ireland, said the conference had been a great success.

She said: “The conference went extremely well and we received some excellent feedback from attendees.

“All the delegates were able to make some very good connections with people of a similar age and in similar positions right across the UK and Ireland. It was a good opportunity to meet the partners of some of our member firms.

“The training was all developed to enhance the delegates’ soft skills and communication techniques to help them succeed in the future.”

Una McSorley, Managing Director of communication consultancy Marcomm, led training at the event and praised the quality of delegates who took part.

“The aim of the course was to prepare the young professionals with the skills that they need to effectively network to maximise their return,” she said.

“They were a fabulous group of delegates and the conference was run both efficiently and effectively. I would like to thank Caroline Cassidy, she did an outstanding job in putting the event together.”
Bob Law, chair of DFK UK & Ireland, recently retired from his position as CEO of Langdowns DFK after 39 years with the firm. Bob is continuing to represent Langdowns within DFK as Non-Executive Director of the firm and said he was delighted to play host for the latest conference.

He said: “We were thrilled to host the latest conference. All of the delegates were very enthusiastic about the training and have developed skills that will help them succeed in the future.”
The tenth DFK UK & Ireland Young Professionals / Managers’ Conference will be held in Liverpool in 2017 and is to be hosted by DSG Accountants.
